Loop Basketball Clinic 2014 with Horace Wormely: Day 2

As we informed on the previous post, we are hosting a series of Loop Basketball Clinic 2014 supported by Higashi Osaka Stadium with the guest coach, Horace Wormely. On Dec 22 in Japan time, we held the 2 clinics for high school players and younger kids up to 6th grade. Please check at the highlight of the Day 2!

Wormely visited Kenmei Academy Senior High School in the afternoon and had 3-hour-long session to the men’s basketball team. This team has a problem of PG’s turnovers and receivers movements along with the ball. Wormely utilizes his sophisticated skills as a point guard, and make players see around the entire court by unique drills.

As he stated before the clinic, he focused on coaching “Details” of every drill and move, such as why you have to slow down the speed at the certain point, why you need to move this way. Players at Kenmei Academy tended to run in full speed all the time on the court. Wormely explained that is not focused on the details and that leads turnovers because of the lack of paying attention to the other players. He repeated the importance of details and accuracy throughout the clinic.

As finishing the clinic, Wormely played mini games against all Kenmei Academy’s players. There is almost no opportunity to play against foreign player, especially professional player like Wormely, for Japanese high school players. Head coach of the Kenmei Academy believes that this opportunity to play against him is the key to experience “Real” basketball, and it will bring players to the next level by motivating by themselves.
In the mini games, players tried the moves that they just learned and played hard agains Wormely.

In the evening, Wormely had a clinic for kids up to 6th graders. Wormely told us that he likes to coach younger kids, and he had a clinic with a lot of fun.

Wormely focused on “Power Position”, and his all pivot, dribble, shooting, and passing drills started with the power position. After the drills, kids enjoyed the fun games with Wormely that requires all dribble steps they learned.

After the clinic, kids went up to Wormely with big smile for asking for his autograph on their basketball items. It was our pleasure that kids enjoyed the clinic with Wormely and tried to communicate with him.
